Presbyopia is the natural age-related loss of near focus that affects everyone, usually after 40. Here is why it happens and the options.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the gradual, age-related loss of the eye's ability to focus on near objects. It is a normal part of ageing, usually becoming noticeable after the age of 40, as the natural lens inside the eye becomes less flexible.

Symptoms

  • Holding books or the phone at arm's length to read
  • Blurred near vision, especially in dim light
  • Eye strain and headaches with close work

What are the options?

  • Reading glasses for near tasks
  • Bifocal or progressive (varifocal) lenses that combine distance and near
  • Multifocal contact lenses for suitable wearers
  • During cataract surgery, multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus lenses may reduce the need for reading glasses

Presbyopia continues to change over several years, so periodic eye checks keep your prescription correct. Book an appointment at Dr. Shamsher Singh Eye Hospital, Khanna.
