Cataracts develop slowly, but these 10 warning signs mean it may be time to consult an ophthalmologist.
Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. They develop slowly over years, making it easy to dismiss early symptoms. Here are 10 signs you should see an ophthalmologist:
- Blurred or cloudy vision β The most common symptom. Objects appear hazy, like looking through a frosted glass.
- Difficulty with night vision β Reduced contrast sensitivity makes night driving particularly difficult.
- Sensitivity to light and glare β Oncoming headlights or bright sunlight cause discomfort or halos.
- Seeing 'halos' around lights β Scattering of light by the cloudy lens creates halos.
- Frequent prescription changes β Needing new glasses every few months despite correction.
- Fading or yellowing of colours β The lens yellows with age, making colours appear dull.
- Double vision in one eye β A cataract can cause diplopia even when the other eye is closed.
- Difficulty reading β Small print becomes increasingly hard even with glasses.
- Difficulty recognising faces β Loss of contrast makes facial recognition difficult.
- Poor performance in bright light β Some cataracts worsen in bright conditions (posterior subcapsular type).
If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule a comprehensive eye examination at DSSEH. Modern phaco cataract surgery is quick, safe, and restores excellent vision in most patients.
