The vision that began it all
Late Dr Shamsher Singh founded this institution in 1971 with a singular devotion to caring for the underprivileged — a lifetime aim he pursued till his last breath. His philosophy of “Service above Self” remains the beating heart of everything DSSEH does today, from advanced sub-specialty surgery to hundreds of free eye camps across Punjab.
Dr. Shamsher Singh Eye Hospital
Dr Shamsher Singh Eye & General Hospital was established in 1971 by Late Dr Shamsher Singh as a 100 bedded hospital. As the time passed, it became more and more of an eye hospital with emphasis on Community Ophthalmology. Since its inception, more than 500 free eye camps have been organized and hundreds of thousands of patients have benefited from them free of cost.
In 1997, on the return from overseas of Dr Sarbjit Singh, the hospital was renamed Dr Shamsher Singh Eye Hospital (DSSEH), a dedicated eye care hospital. It was established as an ultra-modern set up to provide sub-specialty services in ophthalmology to the people of this area. It now has pediatric ophthalmology, Oculo-plastics, Retina, Cornea, refractive surgery, cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), Glaucoma clinic along with other services like Optician shop etc. Dedicated sub-specialists who are trained well and at some of the finest centers are on our team and we have no doubt that we are able to provide these services with both professionalism, dedication and compassion.
Since most surgeries and procedures are done with latest techniques, the recovery is very quick and almost all procedures are done as day care procedures. The patients can go home almost immediately after most procedures and surgeries. For short stays and for emergency cases we have provided two beds in a clean and friendly ward.
At DSSEH we also have facilities for research and training in various fields of ophthalmology. With a well equipped library, a state of the art auditorium and the top of the range audio-visual aids, we hope to become one of the top training institutes.
At DSSEH, we give top priority to patient comfort and strive to make every patient’s visit as free from stress as possible.
Without keeping in mind the welfare and special needs of the underprivileged sections of the society, we shall be failing to fulfill our social obligations towards them. Towards that goal, we go to various underprivileged areas of Khanna town and the nearby towns and villages to cater for their ophthalmic needs, be they preventive, curative or palliative. Help from various philanthropists of the area, general public and even other NGO’s is sought to make this project a success.
Caring for the underprivileged sections was the life time aim of Late Dr Shamsher Singh. DSSEH shall leave no stone unturned to carry on with his philosophy of “Service above Self” which he followed till his last breath.
