Astigmatism causes blurred or distorted vision at all distances because the cornea is shaped unevenly. Here is how it is corrected.
What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a common refractive error caused by the cornea (or lens) being curved more in one direction than another — shaped more like a rugby ball than a football. Light is focused at more than one point, so vision is blurred or distorted at both near and far distances.
Symptoms
- Blurred or stretched vision at all distances
- Eye strain and headaches
- Difficulty seeing fine detail, especially at night
How is it corrected?
Most astigmatism is corrected with cylindrical spectacle lenses or toric contact lenses. Suitable candidates may consider LASIK. Astigmatism can also be addressed during cataract surgery using toric intraocular lenses.
Astigmatism is measured precisely during a refraction test. Book an eye examination at Dr. Shamsher Singh Eye Hospital, Khanna to check your prescription.
