Dry eye happens when your tear film is disrupted. Here are the main causes, the symptoms to watch for, and when to get evaluated.
Healthy eyes rely on a balanced tear film of oil, water, and mucin to stay hydrated, clear, and protected. Dry eye occurs when this delicate system is disrupted.
Primary Causes of Dry Eyes
- Insufficient tear production (aqueous deficiency): the tear glands don't make enough volume to keep the eye surface lubricated.
- Rapid tear evaporation: the protective oily layer breaks down and tears evaporate too quickly — often from prolonged screen time, dry air, or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
- Poor tear film quality (component imbalance): the tears don't spread evenly or stay stable on the eye surface.
Common Symptoms to Watch For
- Gritty, burning, or stinging sensation
- Eye redness and irritation
- Fluctuating or blurry vision
- Excessive watering (a rebound response to dryness)
