Late Dr. Shamsher Singh (September 7, 1922- April 6, 1987)

Dr Shamsher Singh is and shall always be our guiding light

Dr Shamsher Singh was born in District Layallpur (W.Punjab) in the family of S. Hukam Singh, a dispenser in a government hospital. From the very beginning he was a very bright student and always stood first in his class. In the matriculation examination he stood first in the district and was among the toppers in the whole of then combined Punjab. He joined Govt. Medical College Amritsar for his medical education and had many honors to his credit through out his medical studies. After completing his medical studies he joined VJ Hospital Amritsar as a Senior House Surgeon and then a Casualty Medical Officer. After that he joined Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) which he served for 24 years. He served at Jagraon (Punjab), Tajewalla (Haryana), Sidhwan Bet (Punjab), Moga (Punjab) and finally at Khanna (Punjab) where he resigned from the Government job. In 1971, he started private practice at the place, which is now Dr Shamsher Singh Eye Hospital.

He was the founder President of the Indian Medical Association Khanna, Life member Indian Red Cross Society, Life Member All India Ophthalmological Society, founder member of Rotary Cancer Foundation and a Paul Harris Rotarian. The Punjab Government granted Dr Shamsher Singh Parsansa Parman Patra thrice for doing mass ophthalmic work in the rural areas. In his lifetime he performed about four hundred thousand operations and more than half of them were cataract operations. He organized 428 eye camps during his life time. Among his hobbies were music, sports, photography and literature. He was associated with all sorts of academic and cultural activities.

His sudden death on April 6, 1987 in a road accident left all in a state of shock and it also left a big and unbridgeable gap in the lives of all, especially the poor and the downtrodden.

Dr Shamsher Singh was not only an eminent eye specialist and general physician but also a noble and beautiful soul. As a doctor he worked like a missionary, observing the highest traditions of the profession. He was indeed a finest specimen of Indian culture that embodies our great traditions of piety, compassion, service, humanity and brotherhood. His life and works will continue to inspire us all to do noble deeds.
